20071204 half-marathon

so sunday was pretty darn close to a perfect t.brown assignment. on friday i got word that i was to cover the las vegas marathon on sunday, but my editor didn't know i was planning to run the half marathon. when i shared the news, wondering if i was going to have to bail on my plans to run, he and the sports editor asked if i would/could possibly run with a point and shoot and cover the race from the runner's perspective? HELL YES!!!!

so i did and it was a BLAST! with a fist-full of notebook paper and a sharpie in my water belt i made pictures and did little interviews as i ran the 13.1 miles down the las vegas strip with more than 17,000 people, including waaay too many running elvises - 208 to be exact, a new world record of elvises gathered doing anything.

i wrote a short story to go with it and they gave me an open page in today's paper. big props to my editor, mark d., and our sports editor, mark w., for taking the risk with the idea.

so here's the page and the pictures, plus a few that didn't run. i'll spare you the disclaimer about the pictures, just keep in mind i was running 13 miles and they were made with a point and shoot. ;-)

you can read the story on the las vegas sun web site.

ok ok, for my sweet mom....me at mile 12!
