i'm on my way back to vegas tonight after three days covering the final week of the nevada state legislature in carson city. looking around yesterday i saw tired, distracted legislators in the final days while big ticket items are still on the floor....

i should be packing to get on a plane in a handful of hours, but i picked up a bounty of holga film from the last year and a half from being scanned today and can't possibly let it sit until i return.....so, for now, one of mt. hood after snowboarding last spring and two from the third anniversary of the iraq war in portland in 2006....

Up next, UFC 71 at MGM Grand on Saturday night. Today was the "open workouts" which really means the fighters shadow box for 30-90 seconds for pictures and then do a group interview. MGM has a big conference going on and even UFC got squeezed out of the usual arena studios and into two gutted hotel rooms on the fourth floor. It made less than interesting pictures so I indulged with simple portraits with my new 50mm/1.4 as an alternative.

20070518 dark skies

i am a blogger, i am a blogger.....sigh, i am such a bad blogger.

so here is my monday morning effort: a few photos from friday at the 'dark skies' event in the playa about an hour south of lost vegas. it was a regional burn event, burning, as in burning man. there are regional events around the west throughout the year that lead up to the 30-40,000 person burning man event in northern nevada in august....met some locals and started to learn more about what burners are all about. i'm a pacific northwest girl and most festivals of the sort that i've been to have always been in forests so seeing a city grow up out of the massive expanse of the wide open desert was pretty wild.

20070510 morning commute....

i have wanted to get out to the dam (Hoover) for months to check up on the bypass project and finally got my butt out there at 5 AM this morn.....I got an amazing intro tour from the job super and made a few photos....next week i'm going back for the "man cage" morning commute...which should be the beggining of following the workers and the project, and a photo column to come in the next couple weeks....it was the best views i have had at 5am in some time.
